Marie Van Brittan Brown
Marie Van Brittan Brown she was an African American nurse, who was concerned about the safety in her neighborhood, and she created the first home security system in 1966. Her innovative system included a camera, monitors and a microphone, allowing residents to see and communicate with visitors without opening the door. This invention helped laid the foundation for modern home security systems, which have video surveillance and communication features.
Marie Van Brittan Brown, a nurse she works unpredictable long hours. The neighborhood, she lives in had high crime rates that would leave her feeling vulnerable about her and her family's safety. In response to this, she took it upon herself to innovate home security system. After she created this system, it was groundbreaking. The system included a series of interconnected cameras, and able to communicate with others. Her invention enhanced her own safety but also gave others a peace of mind and to be able to feel secure within their own homes.
There is underrepresentation in technology, with many lacking visibilities and many facing barriers that prevent many from being able to achieve their goals. Marie Van Brittan Brown was one of those individuals. Marie lived during a time when black women had limited access to education, which interfered her efforts of possible being recognized Although she was a nurse and did not receive any formal schooling in electrical engineering her and her husband who is an electricidal technician were able to create a home device.
To lower the amount of combat in racial bias in technology, visibility is important for other people and their work to be seen and recognized, and other people can be inspired and can be able to spread their ideas and creativity. Marie was able to do so as the patent she and her husband filed in 1966 cited Marie as lead inventor. even though, their vision of the home security system was not manufactured on a large scale due to the high cost of production, the patent was able to give them recognition in the inventor community and provided a way for others to create more systems for modern day security.
